We know more about their appearance thanks to exceptional fossils. The species Shuvuuia deserti preserved down-like, feathery structures on its body. Scientists studied these filaments using mass spectrometry and other methods. They found the structures were made of beta-keratin. This is the primary protein found in real feathers.
