Alvarezsauridae were a family of small dinosaurs. They had very long legs. This helped them run fast.

These dinosaurs had tiny arms. Their hands were small and strong. They had big muscles on their chests and arms. Scientists think they used these arms to dig. They might have dug into nests to find insects like termites.

Some people thought these dinosaurs were early birds. They saw parts that looked like bird parts. For example, they had a bone called a sternum. This is a chest bone. In birds, this bone helps hold strong muscles. But these dinosaurs were not birds. They were a group called maniraptoran theropods. They just grew bird-like parts in their own way.

One dinosaur, Shuvuuia deserti, had soft skin. It had tiny, downy bits. These bits were made of beta-keratin. This is the same protein found in real feathers.

These animals lived a long time ago. They lived between 86 and 66 million years ago. You can find their fossils in Asia, North America, and South America.
