These birds are part of a group called palaeognaths. This group also includes flightless birds like the emu. Most palaeognaths cannot fly. But tinamous are the only ones that can! They prefer to run or hide instead.

Tinamous eat many things. They eat seeds and fruit. They also eat worms and insects.

They even eat small animals.

Most tinamous live on the ground. They build nests among rocks or plants. The nests stay low to the earth. The males sit on the eggs. They keep them warm for two or three weeks. The chicks can run soon after they hatch. They can take care of themselves in three weeks.

Many animals try to eat tinamous. This includes jaguars and falcons. The biggest threat to them is losing their homes. People clear land for farms. This makes it hard for them to live.
