These birds live in warm forests in the Americas. There are seven different species of potoo. They are nocturnal, which means they are active at night.

During the day, potoos hide from danger. They sit very still on tree stumps. Their feathers have a pattern called cryptic plumage. This helps them blend in with the wood. If they feel scared, they use a freeze position. This makes them look like a broken branch.

Potoos have very large eyes to see in the dark. They hunt for insects like beetles and moths. A potoo sits on a perch and waits. When a bug flies by, the bird flies out to catch it. They swallow their food whole.

Potoos do not build nests. Instead, they lay one spotted egg on a stump. Both parents help keep the egg warm. The chicks also stay very still to hide.
