The hoatzin is a strange bird from South America.

It lives in wet swamps and forests. This bird has a blue face and a spiky crest. It also makes many noisy sounds like grunts and hisses.

Baby hoatzins have two claws on each wing. They use these claws to climb tree branches. This helps them stay safe from predators. If a hawk attacks, the chicks drop into the water. They swim away and then climb back up using their wing claws. These claws disappear when the bird grows up.

Hoatzins eat mostly leaves. They have a special way to digest them. Tiny living things called bacteria live in their gut. These bacteria break down the leaves through fermentation. This is a way of turning food into power. This process makes the bird smell very bad. Because of this, some people call it the stinkbird. A meal can take 45 hours to pass through its body. The bird's large crop helps it hold all this food.
