The potoo is a very unusual bird from the Americas.

These birds belong to the family Nyctibiidae. They live in warm, humid forests from Mexico down to Argentina. You can also find them on islands like Jamaica and Tobago. Many people call them "poor-me-ones" because of their haunting calls. They are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. During the day, they stay very still to hide.

To stay safe, potoos use a clever way of hiding. They have cryptic plumage, which is a pattern of feathers that blends in. They often perch upright on tree stumps during the day. If they sense danger, they use a "freeze" position. This makes them look like a broken tree branch.

They do not build nests like many other birds. Instead, they lay one spotted egg on a stump. Both parents take turns keeping the egg warm. The chicks also stay very still to look like clumps of fungus.

When night comes, the potoo begins to hunt for food. They use their huge eyes to scan for movement in the dark.

They usually sit on a perch and wait for insects to fly by. When a bug appears, they fly out to snatch it. They eat things like beetles, moths, and grasshoppers. They swallow their prey whole without chewing it. This sit-and-wait method helps them save energy while they hunt.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. In 1853, French naturalists Jean-Charles Chenu and Œillet des Murs named the family.

Fossils show that potoos lived in Europe a long time ago. One fossil from Germany is called Paraprefica. It lived during the Eocene period. This ancient bird had a skull similar to modern potoos. Researchers use DNA to study how the different species are related.

There are seven different species of potoo living today.

Some are large, like the Great Potoo. Others include the White-winged Potoo and the Rufous Potoo.

You might recognize their behavior if you have seen a flycatcher. Like those birds, potoos strike quickly from a perch. Their large heads and wide mouths make them look very different from other birds. They are truly special creatures of the forest.
