Nightjars are medium-sized birds that are active at night or during dusk. Scientists call these active times nocturnal or crepuscular. These birds are found on almost every continent except for Antarctica. They can live in many places like rainforests or deserts. Most nightjars prefer open country that has some plants. They can live at many heights, from the sea to high mountains.

Most nightjars have a very specific way of looking and moving. They have long, pointed wings and very short legs. Their bills are also very small. Many species have rictal bristles, which are hair-like feathers near the mouth. Their feathers have colors that help them hide during the day. They might also have pale spots to talk to other birds.

People have studied these birds for a long time. In 2021, experts changed how they group these birds. They decided that the name Caprimulgiformes should only apply to nightjars. Other birds like potoos and frogmouths now have their own groups. Scientists also look at fossils to learn about the past. One fossil bird was found in southwest France in 1988.

There are many different kinds of nightjars in the world. The family has 22 different genera, which are groups of similar birds. One group is called Caprimulgus and has 39 different species. The common poorwill is a very special bird in this family. It can enter torpor, which is a state where its body temperature drops. This helps the bird survive for weeks or even months.

Nightjars are part of our world in many ways. Some people call them bugeaters because they eat many insects. The state of Nebraska once used this name for its people. Some songs also mention nightjars singing in the lyrics. It can be hard for scientists to study them because they are secretive. Some birds, like the Vaurie's nightjar, are very hard to find.
