Ground roller

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Ground rollers are a special family of birds. They belong to a group called Brachypteraciidae. These birds live only on the island of Madagascar. They are non-migratory birds. This means they do not fly to new lands every year. They stay in the same place to live. These birds are part of the larger order Coraciiformes. They are most closely related to the true rollers.

These birds spend much of their time on the ground. They have long legs to help them move. Their wings are short and rounded. This shape helps them live on the forest floor. They hunt for reptiles and large insects. They are much more shy than true rollers. You might only hear their hooting breeding call. It is often hard to find them in the Malagasy forests.

Ground rollers build their own homes in a unique way. They live as solitary pairs. These pairs dig holes in the ground. They use these holes to make their nests. This is different from true rollers. True rollers rarely use ground holes. Even when they do, they do not dig them. Ground rollers do all the work themselves.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. In 2000, researchers described a new extinct species. It was called the Ampoza ground roller. They found 2,000-year-old remains in Ampoza. These remains were from the Holocene period. In 2001, studies helped clarify how these birds are grouped. These studies used mtDNA analyses to check their family tree. This helped scientists understand their true relationships.

You can also find the Long-tailed ground roller. The Pitta-like ground roller is another species. Finally, there is the Rufous-headed ground roller. All these birds are found in Madagascar. They are a very important part of that island's nature.
