The Ornithomimus was a very special kind of dinosaur.

It lived in western North America during the Late Cretaceous period. This dinosaur was a bipedal animal, which means it walked on two legs. It was a very swift runner.

Its body was covered in feathers. It also had a small beak that had no teeth. This beak suggests it was an omnivore. An omnivore is a living thing that eats many different kinds of food.

Scientists can learn how this dinosaur lived by looking at its bones. The name Ornithomimus means "bird mimic." This is because its feet look very much like a bird's feet.

Some fossils show tiny bumps called quill knobs. These knobs are spots on the bone where feathers were attached.

By studying these details, we can see how it looked. We can also see how it moved through its world.

Finding these fossils has been a long journey for scientists. Othniel Charles Marsh named the first species, Ornithomimus velox, in 1890.

He used a partial hand and foot found in Colorado. George Lyman Cannon found these fossils on June 30, 1889. Later, Charles Mortram Sternberg named a different species in 1933. He found a nearly complete skeleton in the Horseshoe Canyon Formation. This discovery helped us understand the dinosaur much better.

There are many important facts about these animals. Most of the best fossils were found in Alberta, Canada. One species is Ornithomimus edmontonicus.

Another species is Ornithomimus velox. Scientists have looked at many other fossils over the years. Some fossils were found in Montana by John Bell Hatcher. Others were found in Wyoming by A. E. Sullins in 1891. These finds helped change what we knew about the group.

Sorting these dinosaurs into groups can be a hard job. For a long time, scientists put many different animals into the Ornithomimus group. In 1972, a scientist named Dale Russell did a big study. He used math to look at the shapes of the bones. He showed that some dinosaurs were actually different groups. He created new names like Archaeornithomimus and Dromiceiomimus. Today, researchers still study these fossils to find the truth.
