Hesperornis was a large bird that lived a very long time ago.

Its name comes from Greek words meaning "western bird." These birds lived during the Late Cretaceous period. They lived in warm, shallow seas like the Western Interior Seaway. Some species may have even lived in fresh water. They are important because they help us see how birds and reptiles are linked.

This bird had a very special way of moving through the water. It had almost no wings at all. Instead, it used its powerful hind legs to swim. It was likely an excellent foot-propelled diver. Its legs were probably tucked inside its body up to the ankle. This meant its feet jutted out to the sides near its tail. Because of this, the bird might have been very clumsy on land.

Hesperornis had both a beak and teeth. The teeth were not in separate holes like most animals. Instead, they sat in a long groove in the jaw. This is a special way of growing teeth. The front of the mouth likely had a hard beak made of keratin. The roof of the mouth had small pits. These pits helped the teeth lock into place when the bird closed its jaws.

Scientists first found these fossils in the late 19th century. O. C. Marsh discovered the first specimen in 1871. He was on an expedition in Kansas. He found a large fossil bird that was at least five feet tall. Later, one of his students named Thomas H. Russell found a nearly perfect skeleton. This discovery helped spark the famous Bone Wars between Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope.

Many different species of Hesperornis have been found. Most of these species lived in North America. For example, Hesperornis regalis is the best known species from Kansas.

Scientists also found Hesperornis altus in Montana. One species, Hesperornis rossicus, was found in Russia. This Russian species was the largest of all the Hesperornis. It lived during the early Campanian age.
