Hadrosaurids are a group of dinosaurs. Many people call them duck-billed dinosaurs. This is because the bones in their snouts look flat like a duck's bill.

There are two main groups of hadrosaurs. One group is the lambeosaurines. These had hollow crests, or tubes, on their heads.

The other group is the saurolophines. These had solid crests or no crests at all. Saurolophines were often bulkier than the lambeosaurines.

Scientists once thought these dinosaurs lived in water. They thought the animals ate soft water plants. However, new study shows they lived on land. They likely ate plants like conifers. Some hadrosaurs even walked on two legs. Young ones mostly walked on two legs. Adults mostly walked on four legs.

People have been finding hadrosaur fossils for a long time. Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden found the first North American fossils. He found them near the Judith River between 1854 and 1856. Joseph Leidy named some of these species in 1856. He named Trachodon mirabilis and Thespesius occidentalis. Later, geologist William Parker Foulke found more bones. He gave them to Leidy in 1858. This helped scientists learn about Hadrosaurus foulkii.

For many years, scientists had different ideas about hadrosaurs. Edward Drinker Cope thought their teeth were very fragile. He believed they only ate soft plants in the water. Many people thought they were aquatic animals for a century. In 1908, Charles Hazelius Sternberg found a very complete specimen. This was an Edmontosaurus. Henry Osborn called it the "Dinosaur mummy" in 1912. It had skin impressions that looked like webbing. This made people think they lived in water.

New research changed how we see these dinosaurs today. In 1964, John H. Ostrom challenged the old ideas. He used fossils and stomach contents to study them. He argued that hadrosaurs were terrestrial animals. This means they lived on land. They likely ate plants like conifers.

They were incredibly successful members of the ornithopod family during the Late Cretaceous Period. While they likely originated in North America, they eventually spread into Asia. One of the most impressive features of a hadrosaur was its mouth. Unlike more primitive iguanodontian ancestors, hadrosaurids developed complex dental batteries. A dental battery is a massive stack of many teeth working together. These teeth created an effective, continuous grinding surface for processing tough vegetation. The teeth were rooted deeply and were constantly replaced as they wore down. This system allowed them to eat a wide variety of plants without losing their ability to chew. Additionally, hadrosaurs were facultative bipeds. This means they could walk on both two legs and four legs. In many species, the young walked mostly on two legs, while adults used four.

Scientists divide the Hadrosauridae family into two principal subfamilies. The first is Lambeosaurinae, which are characterized by having hollow cranial crests or tubes on their heads.

This group includes several tribes, such as Parasaurolophini and Lambeosaurini. The second subfamily is Saurolophinae, which were often bulkier than the lambeosaurines. Saurolophines typically lacked hollow crests, though some forms had solid crests. This group includes tribes like Brachylophosaurini and Edmontosaurini. Recent studies use these specific taxonomic units to describe the fine relationships between different species.

The history of discovering these animals began in the mid-19th century. Between 1854 and 1856, Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden found the first dinosaur fossils recognized in North America. Joseph Leidy described these finds in 1856, naming species like Trachodon mirabilis and Thespesius occidentalis.

Around the same time, geologist William Parker Foulke investigated fossils found by a farmer. These were also given to Leidy, who described Hadrosaurus foulkii in 1858. This contradicted the idea of weak jaws, though they still thought the animals might eat some water plants. Later, researchers like Peter Dodson and Michael K. Brett-Surman made significant changes to how we classify these dinosaurs. In 1979, John R. Horner named the famous genus Maiasaura. The study of these animals has become even more intense in the 21st century.

Today, hadrosaur research is more prolific than ever before. In 2011, the International Hadrosaur Symposium was held at the Royal Tyrrell Museum to discuss ongoing studies. This led to the 2015 publication of the book "Hadrosaurs," edited by David A. Eberth and David C. Evans. Data shows that the 21st century has seen over two hundred papers published on the topic. The internet has acted as a catalyst for this massive boom in scientific communication. Modern research now looks at diverse subjects like growth, phylogeny, and biogeography. This allows us to understand how these incredible animals lived and moved across the ancient world.
