We know a lot about how it looked from different fossils. The largest known skull belongs to a specimen called CMN 8880.

This skull was very long and wide. Some scientists estimate this animal was about 26 feet long.

Other specimens were smaller, like the one found in Alberta, Canada. That smaller one was about 18 feet long. It had a wide, low skull with horns pointing backward.

Ankylosaurus was a slow-moving animal that ate plants. It had a broad beak at the front of its mouth.

His team found the first specimen, known as the holotype. Brown officially named the dinosaur in 1908. In 1910, Brown led another expedition to Alberta, Canada. This discovery was very important because it included the first known tail club for this genus.

In 1947, collectors Charles M. Sternberg and T. Potter Chamney found the largest known skull, specimen CMN 8880. While many parts were missing in early reconstructions, these fossils have helped us understand the animal much better.

Scientists use these fossils to estimate how large Ankylosaurus actually was. The sizes varied between different specimens. The largest skull, CMN 8880, belonged to an animal that may have been about 26 feet long.

In contrast, a smaller specimen found in Alberta was about 18 feet long. Researchers like Arbour and Mallon have provided different weight estimates based on these sizes. For the smaller specimen, they estimated a weight of about 4,000 pounds. For the larger specimen, they tentatively estimated a weight of about 8,000 pounds. These numbers show that Ankylosaurus was a massive, heavy animal.

The way Ankylosaurus ate is also very interesting. It had a wide, low skull with a broad beak at the front. This beak was used for non-selective browsing. This means the animal did not pick only specific plants but ate many different kinds.

Behind the beak, it had rows of small, leaf-shaped teeth. The snout also had unique nasal chambers.

These sinuses were expanded to the sides. Scientists think these chambers might have helped with heat and water balance. They may have even helped the animal make sounds for vocalization.

Ankylosaurus lived in a complex ecosystem alongside many famous dinosaurs. It shared its environment with the Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, and Edmontosaurus.

Even though it lived near them, it may have lived in different areas. For example, it lived alongside a relative called Denversaurus. However, their ecological niches did not seem to overlap. This suggests Ankylosaurus might have preferred living in upland areas. By studying these connections, paleontologists can see how different species shared the land without competing for the same resources.
