Ankylosaurus was a huge, armored dinosaur from a long time ago.

It lived in western North America during the very end of the Cretaceous Period. This was about 70 to 66 million years ago. It was one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to live on Earth. This dinosaur was a member of the Ankylosauridae family. Its closest relatives were animals named Anodontosaurus and Euoplocephalus.

This animal had a very special way of protecting itself. Its body was covered in osteoderms, which are bony armor plates.

Some of these plates formed bony half-rings around its neck. The dinosaur also had a large club on the end of its tail. Scientists think it used this club for defense or for fighting.

Many of its bones were fused, which means they grew together. This fusion made its skull and body much stronger. This is why its name means "fused lizard."

People first found fossils of this dinosaur in 1906.

An American scientist named Barnum Brown led an expedition to Montana. He found the first specimen in the Hell Creek Formation. He officially named the dinosaur in 1908. His name for it, Ankylosaurus magniventris, means "great belly." This name describes how wide the animal's body was.

We know a lot about how it looked from different fossils. The largest known skull belongs to a specimen called CMN 8880.

This skull was very long and wide. Some scientists estimate this animal was about 26 feet long.

Other specimens were smaller, like the one found in Alberta, Canada. That smaller one was about 18 feet long. It had a wide, low skull with horns pointing backward.

Ankylosaurus was a slow-moving animal that ate plants. It had a broad beak at the front of its mouth.

It used this beak to eat many different kinds of plants. Behind the beak, it had rows of small, leaf-shaped teeth. It lived in the same world as the famous Tyrannosaurus. It also lived alongside Triceratops and Edmontosaurus. Even though it was a famous dinosaur, it was quite rare in its environment.
