Placerias was a huge animal that lived a very long time ago. Its name means "broad body."

This animal lived during the Triassic period. It lived between 230 and 215 million years ago. It belonged to a group called dicynodonts. Specifically, it was part of a group known as Kannemeyeriiformes. This was the last known group of dicynodonts before they went extinct.

This creature was a herbivore, so it only ate plants. It had a large, barrel-shaped body. It also had a strong neck and thick legs. Scientists think it was like a modern hippopotamus. It likely spent the wet season wallowing in water. It probably chewed on plants found along river banks.

It used a beak to slice through thick roots and branches. It also had two bony bumps called caniniforms. These were not real teeth. They were extensions of the skull that looked like tusks. Some had short bumps and some had long bumps. Scientists think the long ones belonged to males.

People have found many fossils of this animal in North America. Barnum Brown found the first fossil in 1900. It was an upper arm bone found near Cameron, Arizona. Later, in 1991, a well-preserved skull was found in that same area. Other pieces have been found in New Mexico and North Carolina. These finds help us learn about the animal's life.

A very special place is called the Placerias Quarry. Charles Camp and Samuel Welles found it in 1930. It is located near St. Johns in Arizona. This site is part of the Chinle Formation. Over 1,600 bones have been found at this one spot. These bones belong to about 41 different animals. The bones were found in mudstone. This tells us the area might have been a flood-plain.

Studying these bones helps us understand how Placerias grew. Scientists looked at the bone structure of P. hesternus. The bone shows that the animal grew very quickly. It also had periods where it grew more slowly. Once the animal reached its maximum size, its growth stopped. This is shown by a special layer in the leg bone. We can compare its life to animals we see today. Its shape and habits remind us of how large animals live near water.
