Brontotheres were a family of large, extinct mammals. They belonged to an order called Perissodactyla. This is the same group that includes horses, rhinoceroses, and tapirs today.

These animals lived a long time ago during the Eocene epoch. They were mostly found in North America and Asia. Some fossils have also been found in Eastern Europe. They liked to live in thick, wet forests.

These animals grew in size over many years. The earliest ones were quite small. For example, Eotitanops was only about one meter tall. They were about the size of a modern tapir. Later species became huge. Some grew over 2.5 meters tall. These large animals could weigh more than one tonne. Some individuals in the Megacerops group might have been even heavier.

Many brontotheres had special bony horns on their snouts. These horns were different from rhino horns. Rhino horns are made of keratin. Brontothere horns were actually outgrowths of their skull bones.

Some species had two paired horns above their eyes. The Megacerops had large horns that showed differences between males and females. One Asian species, Embolotherium, had a single long horn. This looked like a bony battering ram.

Scientists found the first brontothere fossils in South Dakota. These were the first fossilized mammals found west of the Mississippi River.

Many fossils come from the White River Badlands in the United States. This area is a treasure trove of remains. Other important finds come from the Gobi Desert in Asia. In Kazakhstan, researchers found very well-preserved fossils of Aktautitan.

Brontotheres had special teeth for eating soft plants. Their molars had a W-shaped pattern on the top. This shape helped them shear and cut through leaves.

They were very selective about what they ate. They mostly focused on foliage in the forests. They likely became extinct when the world changed. The climate became much drier during the Oligocene. They could not adapt to these open, dry landscapes.
