This family includes zebras and asses. It also includes many species that are now extinct. These extinct animals are known only from fossils. All living members belong to the genus Equus.

This group is part of a larger order called Perissodactyla. This order also includes tapirs and rhinoceroses. Being an equid means you are part of this special family.

These animals changed a lot over a very long time. They began as small animals with many toes. They grew into larger animals with only one toe.

This single toe carries most of their body weight. Their teeth also changed to help them eat. They developed teeth to cut and shear tough plants. This helps them eat a diet of fibrous grass. They are also hindgut fermenters to help digest this food.

Scientists have studied these changes for a long time. The oldest fossils in this family were found in North America.

These fossils date back to the Eocene epoch. That was about 54 million years ago. Early fossils were once called Hyracotherium. Now, scientists say that name belongs to a different group. The other early species were moved into different groups called genera.

Many interesting facts exist about how these animals lived. The very first equids were only the size of a fox.

They had four toes on their front feet. They had three toes on their back feet. These early animals ate soft plants. Their brains were complex and showed they were alert. During the Miocene epoch, the family became very diverse. Many new species appeared during that time.

We can see how these animals relate to our world. The genus Equus first started in North America.

Later, they spread out across the whole world. You can see their history in the way they move. Modern horses have a body shape that developed long ago. They are built for running on their single toes. This connects the small fox-sized animals to the large horses we see today.
