Dicynodonts were a very successful group of plant-eating animals. Their name means "two dog tooth" because of their tusks.

They lived a long time ago on the Earth. These animals were part of a group called therapsids. They were not mammals, but they were related to them. They lived in many different places around the world. Some were tiny like rats, while others were huge. One kind was even as big as an elephant.

Most dicynodonts had a very special way of eating. They did not have many teeth in their mouths. Instead, they had a hard, horny beak.

This beak worked much like a turtle's beak. They used it to eat tough plants. To chew, they pulled their lower jaw backward. This created a strong shearing action to cut food. Most of them also had two large tusks. These tusks were actually very large teeth.

These animals first appeared in the Middle Permian period. This was about 270 to 260 million years ago.

They lived in a place called Southern Pangaea. They became the most common plant-eaters in the Late Permian. Then, a huge event called the end-Permian mass extinction happened. This event wiped out most other therapsids about 252 million years ago. A few groups of dicynodonts survived this hard time. One famous survivor was an animal called Lystrosaurus.

Scientists have studied these fossils for a long time. A geologist named Andrew Geddes Bain found them in South Africa. He described them in 1845. He called them "bidentals" because of their two teeth.

A famous scientist named Richard Owen also studied them. He gave them the official name Dicynodontia in 1859. He named two species from South Africa that year. These were Dicynodon lacerticeps and Dicynodon bainii. He later honored Bain with a different name for a short time.

We can learn a lot from how they lived. Many scientists think dicynodonts were warm-blooded animals. This means they could keep their body heat steady.

Their bones had many tiny blood channels. We also found bits of hair in fossil droppings. This hair might have come from dicynodonts that were eaten. Some dicynodonts also had fleshy pads on their feet. This helps us imagine how they walked on the ground. They were very diverse and successful for millions of years.
