Dicynodonts were a group of plant-eating animals. Their name means "two dog tooth." This is because they often had two large tusks.

Most of them did not have many teeth. Instead, they had a hard beak like a turtle. They used this beak to eat tough plants. To chew, they pulled their lower jaw back. This made a strong cutting motion.

These animals lived a long time ago. They first appeared about 270 million years ago. They lived all over the world. Some were small like rats. They could dig in the ground. Others were very large. One kind was as big as an elephant.

Scientists think they might have been warm-blooded. This means their bodies could keep a steady heat. We think this because of their bones. Their bones had many tiny channels for blood. We also found bits of hair in old fossil droppings. This hair might have come from dicynodonts. They lived until the end of the Triassic period. Then, they died out.
