Dinocephalians were a group of large animals from a long time ago.

Their name means "terrible heads." These animals lived during the Early and Middle Permian periods. This was between 279.5 and 260 million years ago. They belonged to a group called therapsids. Some lived in water, like Moschops. Others lived on land, like Anteosaurus.

They were some of the largest animals of that time. Only a few other creatures, like caseids, were as big.

These animals had very special ways of eating.

All dinocephalians had front teeth that locked together. This helped them slice food into small bits. This made it easier for them to digest. Later types even grew heels on their teeth. These heels met to create a surface for crushing food. Some were meat-eaters, some ate plants, and some ate both. This variety helped them fill many roles in nature.

Many dinocephalians had very strange-looking heads.

Their skulls were often very thick. This thick bone is called pachyostosis. Scientists think they used these heavy heads for head-butting. They might have hit each other to defend land or find a mate. Some species even grew horn-like structures on their heads. These horns grew on different types, like Estemmenosuchus and Styracocephalus.

Scientists have found many fossils of these creatures.

They have found bones in Russia and China. They have also found them in Brazil and South Africa. Fossils are also in Zimbabwe and Tanzania. The biggest herbivores, like Tapinocephalus, were very heavy. Some omnivores, like Jonkeria, may have weighed up to 400 kilograms. The largest meat-eaters, like Titanophoneus, weighed about half a tonne.

These animals lived through big changes in Earth's history. They grew large as older animals, called pelycosaurs, began to die out.

However, the dinocephalians also faced a hard time. They all died out during the Capitanian mass extinction event. We do not know the exact reason why this happened. It could have been disease or sudden changes in the weather. After they were gone, smaller animals took their place.
