Moschops had long and stout teeth. These teeth helped it eat tough plants. It ate things like cycad stems. These plants did not have much nutrition in them. Because of this, Moschops had to eat for a long time. It also had a very thick skull. Scientists think it might have used its head to fight. It may have bumped heads with others to compete.

Finding these animals took a long time. Robert Broom found the first pieces of Moschops. He found them in the Karoo region of South Africa. These fossils were part of the Ecca Group. They were also in the Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone.

In 1910, the fossils were sent to New York City. They were kept at the American Museum of Natural History. Experts described the fossils in 1911. Scientists found two main species. One is called Moschops capensis. The other is called Moschops koupensis.

Moschops had a body built for heavy work. Its elbow joints were very special. They could open very wide. This let the animal walk in a mammal-like way. It did not crawl on the ground like other animals. This helped it carry its huge body. It also let the animal move in short bursts of speed.

Some scientists think it lived partly in water. They look at the way the bones are built. The bones have a thick layer of cortical bone. They also have a part called medullary spongiosa. This might mean it lived a semi-aquatic life.

We can learn a lot by looking at Moschops today. It shows us how land animals changed over time. It was a heavy animal that moved like a mammal. Even though it lived millions of years ago, it is very interesting. It lived in a world with other animals like titanosuchids. It also lived near larger therocephalian species.
