Notoungulates were a huge group of animals in South America. They lived for a very long time. Their history began about 61 million years ago. They stayed around until 11,000 years ago. This group was very diverse in its body shapes. Some animals were small like rabbits. Other animals were huge like rhinoceroses.

These animals had many different ways of living. Scientists divide them into two main groups. One group is called Typotheria. The other group is called Toxodontia. Typotheres were usually small or medium in size. Toxodontians were often medium or large animals. Some toxodontians looked like hippopotamuses. One type called Homalodotherium even had claws on its arms. It could stand on its back legs to eat.

Many of these animals had special teeth. Several families had teeth that grew all the time. These are called ever-growing cheek teeth. This helped them eat tough food. They might have eaten lots of grass. They might have also eaten plants with volcanic dust on them. This dust is very scratchy and wears teeth down. Ever-growing teeth helped them keep up.

Scientists have studied how these animals are related to others. They look at things like DNA and collagen. This shows they are closely related to perissodactyls. Perissodactyls are odd-toed animals. This group includes horses, tapirs, and rhinoceroses. They belong to a larger group called Panperissodactyla. This means they are true ungulates.

Eventually, these animals began to disappear. This happened as the climate changed. New animals also arrived from North America. This event is called the Great American Interchange. Some large toxodontians like Mixotoxodon even moved into North America. They were found as far north as Texas. The very last ones died out about 12,000 years ago. This was part of a time when many large mammals vanished. Some people think the arrival of humans helped cause this.
