Ankylosauria is a group of plant-eating dinosaurs known for their incredible protection.

Most of these dinosaurs had heavy armor covering their bodies. This armor was made of bony plates called osteoderms. These plates were very much like the shells found on turtles. The armor could cover their backs and their sides.

This protection helped keep them safe from predators. They were part of a larger group called Thyreophora. This group also includes the stegosaurs, which had plates and spikes.

These dinosaurs worked in a very special way to eat and breathe. They were built low to the ground on four short, strong legs. Most stayed below one meter tall while they fed on plants. They ate things like ferns, cycads, and angiosperms. They had long, flexible tongues to help them move food. A special part of their mouth helped them breathe while they chewed.

Their large bellies suggest they used bacteria to help digest their meals. This process is called fermentation.

Scientists have been studying these armored giants for a long time. Henry Fairfield Osborn first named the group in 1923.

Earlier, in 1908, Barnum Brown described the Ankylosauridae family. He once thought they had very curved backs. We now know they actually had flat backs. Researchers like Kenneth Carpenter and Paul Sereno helped define the group later. They used specific dinosaur species to make the scientific rules clear. This helps scientists organize all the different types of dinosaurs.

There are many important facts about where they lived and when. Ankylosaurs first appeared in North Africa during the Middle Jurassic. They lived all the way until the end of the Late Cretaceous. Two main families, Nodosauridae and Ankylosauridae, lived in the Northern Hemisphere. These animals were found in North America, Europe, and Asia. Other groups, like Parankylosauria, lived in the south. These were found in South America, Australia, and Antarctica.

Some fossils have even been found in Scotland.

Learning about ankylosaurs helps us see how different animals adapt. Just as a turtle uses a shell for safety, these dinosaurs used bony shields. Their armor was made of many small parts. Some were rectangular or oval plates called scutes. Others were smaller nodules that filled the gaps. Even their skulls had bony shields that fused together.

This shows how nature builds amazing ways to stay protected. It is like wearing a suit of armor made of bone.
