The armor of an ankylosaur was a complex system of different parts. Most of the body was covered in scutes, which are rectangular or oval bony plates. These scutes were often arranged in rows from side to side. Many scutes featured a central ridge called a keel. Smaller bony nodules filled the gaps between these larger plates to ensure there were no weak spots.

Around the neck, these animals often had one to three solid bony rings. In the Nodosauridae family, these rings were made of several adjoining scutes. In the Ankylosauridae family, the scutes were often partially or completely fused together. This fusion even extended to the skull, where shields merged with the underlying bone.

Ankylosaurs were physically built for a life of low-level grazing. They were bulky quadrupeds, meaning they walked on four legs. Their limbs were short but very powerful to support their heavy weight. Most of these dinosaurs lived only about one foot off the ground. They primarily fed on vegetation at or below a height of one meter. Their diet included plants such as ferns, cycads, and angiosperms.

The history of ankylosaur evolution is a subject of ongoing research. They are considered a close group of stegosaurs within the Eurypoda clade. Both groups share the presence of osteoderms in their skin. However, they followed different evolutionary paths. While stegosaurs developed raised plates, ankylosaurs evolved toward increased armor and a more consolidated carapace. The origin of the group is still poorly understood. Only a few specimens from the Middle Jurassic have been found.
