Marginocephalia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Marginocephalia is a group of dinosaurs with a special feature. They have a bony shelf or margin on the back of their skulls. This group includes two main types of dinosaurs. One type is the Pachycephalosauria, which means "thick-headed reptiles." The other type is the Ceratopsia, which means "horned-faces."

Most of these animals were herbivores that ate plants. They used their unique head shapes to show off or communicate. Scientists officially defined this group in 2021. They used specific dinosaur names to group them together. These dinosaurs were very important to the history of life on Earth.

These dinosaurs had many ways to eat tough plants. Early members used gastroliths, which are small stones swallowed to help digestion. Some animals, like Psittacosaurus, used these stones to grind food. Later, they evolved tooth batteries to help them eat better. A tooth battery is a group of many teeth that replace themselves.

Ceratopsians also had a beak called a rostral bone. They had strong muscles that attached to their large head frills. This helped them chew with a lot of force. Their teeth even had tiny ridges called serrations to cut vegetation.

We know a lot about how these animals lived and moved. The first Marginocephalians lived during the Jurassic Period. They later became more common in the Cretaceous Period.

Many of the early ones lived in Asia. Eventually, the group migrated into North America. Some were small and walked on two legs. Other members grew into huge animals that walked on four legs. This change in how they walked is seen in the Ceratopsia group. Only the primitive Psittacosaurus walked on two legs.

Different head shapes served many different purposes. Pachycephalosaurs had thick skull roofs that sometimes formed domes. Some scientists think they used these domes to butt heads in combat. Their brains and neck bones were positioned to protect them from hits.

Ceratopsians had large frills that grew from their heads. These frills might have helped them show off to others. They could also help an animal recognize its own kind. Some fossils show puncture wounds from horns. This suggests horns were used for defense or fighting.

Scientists also look for signs of social behavior in these fossils. They have found bone-beds with hundreds of adult ceratopsians together. This suggests they may have lived in large herds.

Some evidence suggests they even cared for their young. There are also signs of sexual dimorphism in some species. This means males and females might have looked different. For example, Stegoceras validum had two different skull shapes in its population. This could mean the males and females had different head styles.
