Marginocephalia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some dinosaurs had bony edges on the back of their heads. Scientists call this group Marginocephalia. This name means "margin-head." These dinosaurs used their head shapes to show off.

There are two main groups in this family. The first group is Pachycephalosauria. These are "thick-headed reptiles." They had thick skulls that sometimes formed domes. Some think they used these domes to butt heads. This might have been for fighting.

The second group is Ceratopsia. These are "horned-faces." They had beaks and large frills. Some were very big, like Triceratops. They used their horns to defend themselves. They also used them to show dominance.

Most of these dinosaurs ate plants. Some used gastroliths to help. These are small stones swallowed to help digest food. Later, they grew tooth batteries. These are rows of many teeth that replace themselves. This helped them eat tough plants.

Many of these dinosaurs lived in Asia. Then, they moved into North America. Some were small and walked on two legs. Others were large and walked on four legs.
