Nodosauridae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Nodosauridae is a family of armored dinosaurs from a long time ago. They lived from the Late Jurassic to the Late Cretaceous periods. You can find their fossils in Asia, Europe, and North America. Some might have lived in South America too. These dinosaurs were built very strongly and walked on four legs. They were herbivores, so they ate plants. They even had small teeth shaped like leaves to help them eat.

These dinosaurs had a very special way of protecting themselves. They were covered in rows of bony armor nodules and spines. These bony parts are called osteoderms. The osteoderms were covered in keratin sheaths. Keratin is the same tough material found in your fingernails. Many nodosaurids also had sharp spikes sticking out from their shoulders. Unlike their cousins, the ankylosaurids, they did not have heavy clubs on their tails. Instead, their tail tips were more flexible.

Scientists have worked hard to understand how these dinosaurs are related. Othniel Charles Marsh first named the family Nodosauridae in 1890. He used the genus Nodosaurus to anchor the group. Later, Paul Sereno informally defined the group in 1998. He described them as ankylosaurs that were closer to Panoplosaurus than to Ankylosaurus. In 2021, researchers like Madzia and colleagues helped give the groups formal names. They used specific rules called the PhyloCode to make the names official.

There are many different groups within this family. One group is called Panoplosaurini, which includes dinosaurs like Panoplosaurus mirus. This group also includes Denversaurus and Edmontonia. Another group is called Struthiosaurini. It includes the European Struthiosaurus and the North American Pawpawsaurus. Some fossils are even more amazing than others. A fossil called Borealopelta markmitchelli is a nearly complete "mummy." It shows the armor in its life position.

The Borealopelta mummy is a very important discovery for science. It preserves the keratin covering and the remains of the skin. This fossil shows that the dinosaur had reddish pigments. The colors were in a pattern called countershading. This might have helped the dinosaur hide in its environment. Studying these fossils helps us see how living things changed over time. We can learn how they moved and what they looked like in real life.
