Nodosauridae is a family of armored dinosaurs.

They lived a long time ago. They lived from the Late Jurassic to the Late Cretaceous periods. You can find their fossils in Asia, Europe, and North America. Some may have lived in South America too.

These dinosaurs were built quite strongly. They walked on four legs. They were herbivores, which means they ate plants. They had small teeth shaped like leaves.

Nodosaurids had many bony bumps on their skin. These are called osteoderms. These bumps were covered in keratin. Keratin is the same tough stuff found in your fingernails. Many of these dinosaurs had sharp spikes on their shoulders.

They were different from their cousins, the ankylosaurids. Ankylosaurids had heavy clubs on their tails. Nodosaurids did not have those clubs. Instead, their tails were flexible at the ends.

One fossil is very special. It is a "mummy" named Borealopelta markmitchelli. It is a nearly complete set of armor. This fossil shows reddish colors on the skin. It shows a pattern called countershading.

Scientists like Othniel Charles Marsh named this group in 1890. He used the name Nodosaurus to start the group.
