Stegosauria is a group of plant-eating dinosaurs.

They lived during the Jurassic and early Cretaceous periods. You can find their fossils in many places. These include North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America.

These dinosaurs had many unique parts. Most had large, thin plates on their backs. These plates stood up straight from their necks to their tails. Some scientists think the plates helped with body heat. Others think they were for showing off.

At the end of the tail, they had pairs of spikes. This part is called a thagomizer. The spikes were weapons for defense.

Early stegosaurs were small and could run. Later species grew much larger. They had very long back legs. These long legs meant they could no longer run. Instead, they walked on four legs.

Their tails held a high position. This helped them swing their spikes at predators. Stegosaurus is the most famous member of this group. It was named by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1877.
