Scientists found the first fossil in 1897. It lived during the Late Cretaceous time. This dinosaur had a very flat and wide body. It stood on four sturdy legs.

Its head had a short snout with a horny beak. It used this beak to bite plants. The plants went into a large gut to be eaten. The head was covered in small bony tiles. We call these caputegulae. These tiles fused with the skull. The dinosaur also had two horns on the back of its head.

Euoplocephalus was very well protected. It had osteoderms, which are bony plates in the skin. Two bone rings protected its neck. These are called cervical half-rings. The body had rows of large, oval scutes. These scutes helped protect the dinosaur from predators. To defend itself, it used a heavy club at the end of its tail. This club helped it fight off hunters like Albertosaurus.
