Finding these bones was a big job for scientists. A farmer named Guillermo Heredia first found a bone in 1987. He thought he had found old, petrified logs on his farm.

They also found another femur in the La Plata Museum. Some of these bones were crushed by the weight of the earth long ago.

Estimating the size of such a huge animal is difficult. Scientists use computer models to help them. They compare the bones they have to smaller, more complete dinosaurs. Some estimates say the dinosaur was about 100 feet long.

Other experts think it could be even longer. The weight is also a big mystery. One estimate says it weighed 70 to 100 tons. Other scientists have suggested it might weigh even more. It was certainly a heavy animal.

The remains were found in the Huincul Formation. This geological layer was deposited between 97 and 93.5 million years ago. The formation also contains other famous dinosaurs, such as the giant theropod Mapusaurus.

Estimating the size of Argentinosaurus is a complex process. Scientists cannot simply measure a whole skeleton because it does not exist. Instead, they use comparative scaling. They take known measurements from smaller, more complete sauropods. They then scale those proportions up to match the Argentinosaurus fragments. Different researchers have reached different conclusions. Some estimates suggest a length of about 100 feet. Others, like Gregory Paul, have suggested lengths of 115 to 130 feet.

Weight estimates are equally varied. In 2004, Mazzetta and colleagues suggested a mass between 70 and 100 metric tons. This would make it the heaviest sauropod known from good material. Other studies have proposed different numbers. In 2019, Paul estimated a mass of 76 metric tons based on his reconstructions. More recent suggestions in 2023 place the weight between 70 and 100 metric tons at maximum. While massive, it was still smaller than a blue whale, which can exceed 180 metric tons.

The anatomy of the dinosaur shows how it supported such a huge body. The vertebrae were enormous. One dorsal vertebra had a reconstructed height of 5.6 feet. The vertebrae were internally lightened by camellate bone. This is a complex pattern of air-filled chambers inside the bone. This structure helped reduce the weight of the skeleton.

The dinosaur also moved using a specific gait called a pace. In this gait, the fore and hind limbs on the same side move at the same time. Computer models suggest a maximum speed of only 7.2 km/h or 5 mph.

Today, Argentinosaurus remains a central figure in palaeontology. It helps scientists understand the limits of terrestrial biology. Researchers continue to compare it to other giants like Patagotitan and Puertasaurus. These comparisons help clarify how different titanosaurs grew and lived.
