These birds have small heads and thick bodies. They also have short necks and slender bills. Many species have a fleshy part near the bill called a cere.

Most of these birds eat plants. They eat seeds, fruit, or green leaves. Some birds have very bright colors. These are often the ones that eat fruit.

Other birds have dull colors.

Pigeons are very strong fliers. Their wing muscles can be a large part of their weight. They have large wings that help them lift off quickly. This helps them escape from predators. Some birds fly very long distances. The European turtle dove can fly over 5,000 km.

These birds come in many sizes. The crowned pigeon is nearly as big as a turkey. The dodo was a very large bird that could not fly. It is now extinct, which means it no longer lives on Earth. Many other species are also at risk of disappearing.
