Most live in forests. Some live in deserts by using tall cacti for homes.

These birds have special tools to help them live in trees. They have zygodactyl feet. This means they have two toes facing forward and two facing backward. This helps them grip tree trunks. Their tails are also very stiff. They use their tail and feet together to stay steady on a tree.

Woodpeckers use their strong bills to peck at wood. They do this to find insects to eat. They also drum on trees to talk to other birds.

To keep their brains safe from the hard pecking, they have a special bone. This is called the hyoid bone. It is very long. It wraps around the skull like a safety belt.

They also have a thin skin that covers their eyes. This protects them from flying wood bits. This helps them peck quickly without getting hurt.
