Woodpeckers are amazing birds belonging to the family Picidae.

This family includes many different types like tiny piculets and wrynecks. Most of these birds live in forests or woodlands. However, some species live in very different places. For example, the Gila woodpecker lives in deserts by using cacti.

These birds are very important to the world around them. They help by removing insect pests from many different trees. They also leave behind holes in trees that other birds use for homes.

These birds have a very special way of working with trees. They use their feet to grip onto bark very tightly. They have zygodactyl feet, which means they have two toes facing forward and two facing backward.

Most woodpeckers also have very stiff tails to help them stay steady. When they perch on a vertical trunk, their tail and feet work together for support. They use their strong bills to drill into wood for food. Inside their mouths, they have long, sticky tongues to grab insects. These tongues often have tiny barbs to help them pull prey out.

Pecking on wood is a very hard job for a bird's body. Woodpeckers hit wood with very high force. To stay safe, they have many physical features to protect their brains. They have a special bone called the hyoid bone. This bone is very long and wraps around the skull like a safety belt.

Their skull also has sponge-like bone to absorb the shock. To protect their eyes, a thin membrane closes over them during a peck. This keeps flying wood bits from hurting their eyes or their retina.

There are about 240 different species of woodpeckers in the world today. They are spread across almost the whole globe. You can find them everywhere except for places like Australia or Antarctica. Some woodpeckers are very small, like the bar-breasted piculet. Other birds are much larger, like the great slaty woodpecker. The great slaty woodpecker can weigh up to 450 grams. Some birds, like the imperial woodpecker, were even larger before they went extinct.

Today, about 20 species are threatened with extinction because they are losing their homes.

Woodpeckers use their amazing skills for more than just eating. They also use drumming to communicate with each other. They hit trees with their beaks to make a loud sound.

This sound can be heard from a long distance away. This is how they talk to other birds in the forest. You might also see them moving in different ways. Some birds fly in short bursts, while others have a steady pattern. This behavior helps them find new territories or escape bad weather. It is a busy and interesting life for these clever birds.
