Piciformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Piciformes is a large group of birds that mostly live in trees. This group includes about 71 different genera and over 450 species. The most famous members are the Picidae, which are the woodpeckers and their close relatives. In fact, the Picidae make up about half of all Piciformes species. Most of these birds eat insects to stay healthy. However, some groups have different diets. For example, barbets and toucans mostly eat fruit. Honeyguides are very unique because they can digest beeswax, even though they still eat many insects.

Many of these birds have a special way of gripping branches. They have zygodactyl feet, which means they have two toes pointing forward and two toes pointing back. This foot shape is a big advantage for birds that spend much of their time on tree trunks. Most Piciformes have this foot type, but a few three-toed woodpeckers are an exception. These birds also have different feather types. Except for the jacamars, Piciformes do not have down feathers at any age. They only have true feathers.

Scientists study how these birds are related through a study called taxonomy. This is the way we group living things. Some researchers think the whole Piciformes group should be part of a larger group called Coraciiformes. Other studies use nuclear genes to look at their history. For instance, the honeyguides and woodpeckers are each other's closest relatives. The group also contains many different families. These include the Galbulidae, which are jacamars, and the Bucconidae, which are puffbirds.

We can learn about the history of these birds from fossils. Some prehistoric families lived during the Early Eocene, such as Neanis and Hassiavis. Other fossils like Picus gaudryi lived during the Miocene. The modern families we see today have existed since the mid-to-late Oligocene or early Miocene. Much of their history might have happened in Europe. Today, only the Picidae family lives in Europe. Some families that live in the Neotropics might have started in the Old World long ago.

Piciformes birds come in many different sizes. The smallest is the rufous piculet, which is only 8 centimeters long. It weighs just 7 grams. On the other end, the toco toucan is much larger. It is 63 centimeters long and weighs 680 grams. All Piciformes birds nest in cavities, which are holes in trees or wood. Their young are described as altricial. This means the babies are born helpless and need a lot of care.
