Most of these birds live in lowland tropical forests. However, some species live in high mountains in the Andes. These mountain birds can live as high as the tree line.

Toucans belong to the family Ramphastidae. This family includes over 40 different species. It also contains smaller relatives like aracaris and toucanets.

The most striking part of a toucan is its large bill. Even though it looks heavy, the bill is actually very light. It is made of bone struts filled with a foam-like material called keratin. This bill helps the bird with thermoregulation, which is a way to control body heat.

The bill also helps them reach fruit in deep tree holes. It can even help them reach food without moving much. This saves the bird a lot of energy while it eats. Some scientists think the big bill might also scare away smaller birds.

Toucans are mostly frugivorous, meaning they eat fruit.

They are also opportunistic omnivores. This means they will eat other things like insects, small lizards, or even small birds. They often seek out animal food to give their chicks extra protein. Because they eat so much fruit, they help spread seeds through the forest. This makes them very important for the health of the trees. They live in tree hollows to raise their young. Most toucans do not dig these holes themselves. They use holes made by other animals, like woodpeckers.

These birds are very social and like being around others. They often live in pairs or groups of 20 or more birds.

Toucans spend a lot of time socializing while they digest fruit. Digestion can take up to 75 minutes. During this time, they might wrestle or chase each other. They sometimes use their bills to spar or establish dominance. When it is time to sleep, they have a special way of resting. They can snap their tail forward until it touches their head. This makes them look like a round ball of feathers.

Humans have found toucans interesting for a very long time. The name comes from the Tupi or Guaraní words for the bird. In the western world, a man named John Gould wrote detailed books about them. You might even see toucans in things you know today. For example, there is a cartoon mascot named Toucan Sam for cereal. There is also a character named Señor Túcan in Dora the Explorer. Even the stars in the sky include a constellation named Tucana.
