For a long time, people thought dinosaurs were like lizards. They thought dinosaurs were just big, scaly reptiles. But new fossils show a different story. Many dinosaurs had feathers or hair-like parts.

These feathers might have helped them stay warm. This is called insulation. It works like a warm blanket.

Scientists study fossils to learn about these feathers. They look for melanosomes. These are tiny parts in cells that make color. By studying them, we can guess what a dinosaur looked like.

Some feathers were very simple. They looked like thin tubes. Over a long time, feathers changed. They grew into the complex parts we see on birds today. This includes a central stem called a rachis. They also grew barbs. Some feathers even helped animals fly. This shows that birds are closely related to dinosaurs. In fact, birds are a type of feathered dinosaur!
