These animals were herbivores. This means they ate only plants. Most rhynchosaurs had very strong beaks. Their skulls were often shaped like triangles. This shape helped them hold large jaw muscles. Their jaws worked like a penknife. The lower jaw clamped into the upper jaw to cut tough plants.

They had special teeth. These teeth formed wide plates. Much like elephants, they grew new teeth to replace old ones. They ate very tough plants that wore their teeth down. They also had large claws on their back feet. They likely used these claws to dig up roots.

They were very important members of the Triassic world. In some places, they were so common that they made up 40 to 60% of all fossils found. They lived all over the supercontinent known as Pangea. This included places like North America, Europe, and the southern part of Gondwana.

These reptiles had a very special way of eating tough plants. Their skulls were often shaped like a triangle. This wide shape gave them room for very strong jaw muscles. Their upper beak was long and pointed. When they closed their mouths, the lower jaw clamped into the upper jaw. It worked just like the blade of a penknife closing into its handle. This scissor-like action helped them cut through hard vegetation. They also had wide tooth plates instead of regular teeth.

Rhynchosaurs changed a lot as they evolved over time. The earliest forms were small and looked much like lizards. These early types included animals named Mesosuchus and Howesia.

As time passed, rhynchosaurs grew much larger. Some of the more advanced kinds could grow up to two meters long. They even had a way to replace their teeth. Much like modern elephants, they grew new teeth to replace the ones that wore down. They used massive claws on their hind feet to dig up roots and tubers.

Scientists have studied these fossils to understand their history. Rhynchosaurs first appeared during the Induan stage of the Early Triassic. They appeared shortly after a major mass extinction event.

They were most successful during the Carnian stage of the Late Triassic. Many rhynchosaurs may have gone extinct during the end-Carnian extinction event. However, one species called Teyumbaita might have survived into the Norian stage. This shows that some rhynchosaurs lived longer than others.

For a long time, people thought rhynchosaurs were related to the tuatara. The tuatara is a living reptile found today. Now, scientists believe they are actually archosauromorphs. This means they are more closely related to modern birds and crocodiles. They belong to a group called Crocopoda. Even though they are gone, their fossils tell us much about the ancient world. They show how animals adapt to eat difficult foods. They also show how life can bounce back after big changes in nature.

The rhynchosaur body plan was specialized for eating tough plants. Their skulls were often short, broad, and triangular. This shape provided space for powerful jaw muscles. The premaxilla, or the bone at the very front of the snout, formed an elongated beak. When the mouth closed, the lower jaw clamped into the maxilla. This functioned like the blade of a penknife closing into its handle. This scissor-like mechanism allowed them to cut through hard vegetation.

Their dental anatomy was also unique among reptiles. Instead of individual pointed teeth, they had broad tooth plates. These plates were located in the maxilla and the palate. Rhynchosaurs possessed ankylothecodont teeth. This means the teeth had deep roots, similar to the acrodonty seen in modern tuataras. Because their diet was so abrasive, their teeth wore down quickly. To manage this, they had a fixed number of teeth. Like modern elephants, they replaced worn teeth with new ones as they grew.

Rhynchosaurs changed significantly through their evolutionary history. Early primitive forms were small and lizard-like. Genera such as Mesosuchus and Howesia represent these early builds. They had skulls similar to the early diapsid Youngina. As they evolved, they grew much larger. Advanced genera could reach lengths of up to two meters. They also developed massive claws on their hind feet. Scientists believe these claws were used for digging up roots and tubers.

The history of these reptiles began in the Induan stage. This was the first stage of the Triassic period. They appeared shortly after the end-Permian mass extinction. They were part of a major diversification of reptiles. Rhynchosaurs had a worldwide distribution across the supercontinent Pangea. They were especially common in the southern Gondwanan region. They also had records in Europe and North America.

Most rhynchosaurs reached their peak abundance during the Carnian stage. This was part of the Late Triassic. Many scientists believe they went extinct during the end-Carnian extinction event. However, some evidence suggests they may have lasted longer. Researchers described fossils in New Mexico that were once thought to be Otischalkia elderae. These fossils might indicate survival into the Norian stage. Another species, Teyumbaita, is the only rhynchosaur known with confidence to have survived into the Norian.

Our understanding of their classification has changed over time. Historically, scientists linked rhynchosaurs to Rhynchocephalia. This is the group containing the modern tuatara. Today, we know these two groups are unrelated. Rhynchosaurs are now classified as archosauromorphs. Specifically, they belong to the subclade Crocopoda. This makes them more closely related to birds and crocodilians than to lizards. They are organized into the family Rhynchosauridae, which includes the subfamily Hyperodapedontinae.
