Gastornis was a genus of very large birds that lived a long time ago.

These birds lived during the Paleogene period. They lived from the mid-Paleocene to the mid-Eocene epochs. Most fossils of these birds were found in Europe. Some species were also found in North America and Asia. These birds were flightless, which means they could not fly.

They are considered to be related to the Galloanserae. This is a group that includes modern waterfowl and gamebirds.

For a long time, scientists thought these birds were predators. They believed Gastornis hunted small mammals like tiny ancient horses.

However, new evidence has changed this idea. Scientists looked at the structure of their beaks. They also studied the isotopic signatures in their bones. They even looked at footprints left in the ground. The footprints did not show hooked claws. Because of these facts, many scientists now believe they were herbivorous. This means they likely ate tough plants and seeds.

Learning about Gastornis has been a long journey for scientists. The first fossils were described in 1855. A young man named Gaston Planté found them near Paris.

The discovery was important because these were some of the oldest known birds. In 1876, Edward Drinker Cope found fossils in New Mexico. He named them Diatryma gigantea. For many years, people thought Diatryma and Gastornis were different. Later, researchers realized they were very similar. Some scientists even call them the same thing.

The largest species was Gastornis giganteus. This bird could reach a massive height. It could also weigh up to 180 kilograms. Its skull was very large and built strongly. The beak was tall and flattened on the sides. It did not have a sharp hook like some meat-eating birds. The neck was short and had at least 13 large vertebrae. Its wings were vestigial, meaning they were very small and reduced. They were similar to the wings of a modern cassowary.

We can understand Gastornis by looking at birds we know today. Even though they were huge, they are relatives of ducks and geese. Some scientists place them in a group called Anseriformes. Other researchers use the name Anserimorphae for this larger group. A recent 2024 study suggests they might be related to Galliformes. This group includes birds like chickens and pheasants. They might also be related to the extinct Sylviornithidae from the Western Pacific. It is exciting to see how new discoveries change what we know.
