It lived in South America during the Miocene epoch. This bird lived in grassy fields and woodlands. It was a top hunter on the land. It belonged to a group called Phorusrhacidae. These were flightless birds that hunted on the ground. They were very important in the history of South America.

This bird had a very special way of moving. It could not fly at all. Its wings were small and stubby. Instead, it had very strong legs for running. It could run at very high speeds to catch prey. Each foot had three toes. These toes had sharp claws on them.

The name Phorusrhacos comes from Greek words. One part means "bearer" and the other means "rag" or "wrinkle." This name likely describes the wrinkled surface of its jaw. The second part of its name means "very long" in Latin. This refers to its long jaws.
