It lived in South America. This bird lived in woods and grassy fields. It was a top hunter on the land.

This bird could not fly. It had small, stubby wings. It had a long neck and a very large head. The head ended in a huge, hooked beak. This beak could tear through flesh or stab prey.

Phorusrhacos had very strong legs. It could run at high speeds. Each foot had three toes. These toes had sharp claws. The bird was quite big. It may have weighed as much as a male ostrich.

Florentino Ameghino found the first bones in 1887. He found a piece of the lower jaw. He first thought it was a mammal. He later realized it was a bird in 1891. The name Phorusrhacos comes from Greek words. It may mean "rag-bearer" because of the wrinkled jaw. The second part of its name means "very long." This refers to its long jaws.
