Teratorns were a family of very large birds of prey.

They lived in North and South America a long time ago. Most of these birds likely evolved in South America. Later, they moved to North America.

One famous bird was Argentavis magnificens. It was one of the largest flying birds ever. Its wingspan was very wide. It could use the wind to help it fly.

Another well-known bird was Teratornis merriami. It was much bigger than a condor. It lived about 10,000 years ago. Many of its bones were found in tar pits.

How did they eat? Some people thought they only ate dead animals. These birds are related to vultures. But teratorns had long beaks like eagles. This suggests they were active hunters. They might even swallow small animals whole. They could also walk well on the ground. This helped them hunt or look for food. Teratorns likely had feathers on their heads. This is different from the bald heads of vultures. They grew slowly and took many years to become adults.
