It lived in central and northwestern Argentina. This bird belonged to a group called teratornithids. These were large birds of prey.

Argentavis was a record breaker. It was the heaviest flying bird ever found. Some scientists thought its wings were very wide. Other studies suggest its wings were smaller than a different bird named Pelagornis sandersi. Still, Argentavis was much bigger than an Andean condor. It was also much heavier than a swan.

People found its bones in the ground. The first bones were found by Rosendo Pascual and Eduardo Tonni. They found parts of a skull and legs. The name Argentavis comes from Latin words. It means "silver bird." The second part of its name means "magnificent." This is because the bird was so large. Most of the bones were broken or crushed. Scientists used the skull to learn about the bird. They found that it was related to vultures. This helps us understand how these big birds lived.
