Asteriornis was a tiny bird that lived a long time ago.

It lived in a place we now call Belgium. This bird belongs to a group called Neornithes. This group includes every bird alive on Earth today. Many other birds lived at the same time. One of those was a bird named Ichthyornis. Scientists think Asteriornis might help explain why modern birds survived a huge extinction. This extinction happened when a large object hit the Earth. Asteriornis was small and lived on the ground. It also ate many different kinds of food. These traits might have helped it stay alive during hard times.

This bird had a very interesting body.

Its beak was lightweight and curved down slightly. The tip of the beak was somewhat rounded. The skull was narrowest where the eye sockets were located. Asteriornis had long and slender leg bones. These legs look like the legs of birds that live on the ground today. The bird also had a bone called a radius. This bone became wider and flatter near the wrist. It even had a small hooked bump on it. These features help scientists see how the bird moved.

Finding this bird was a big moment for science.

An amateur paleontologist named Maarten van Dinther found the fossil. He found it in the year 2000. The fossil was found in a place called the CBR-Romontbos quarry. It was located near Eben-Emael in Belgium. The bones were found inside four blocks of sediment. These bones were kept at the Maastricht Natural History Museum. The fossil includes an almost complete skull. It also has pieces of leg bones and a radius bone.

Scientists use many names to describe this bird.

The name Asteriornis comes from the Greek word for bird. It also uses the name Asteria. Asteria was a Greek goddess linked to falling stars. The species name is Asteriornis maastrichtensis. This name comes from the Maastricht Formation where it was found. The fossils are about 66.7 to 66.8 million years old. This was just before the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. Some people even gave it the nickname "Wonderchicken."

Asteriornis is a special link in the history of birds.

It has features that look like chickens. It also has features that look like ducks. Scientists call the group containing chickens and ducks Galloanserae. Asteriornis was likely a close relative to the ancestor of both groups. This shows how evolution works in interesting ways. Animals close to a common ancestor often share many traits. Some parts of the bird look like a pheasant. Other parts look like a goose. This makes Asteriornis a very important piece of the puzzle.
