Scientists call this bird Asteriornis. It lived in Belgium about 66 million years ago. This was near the time a big rock hit Earth. This event killed many dinosaurs. But modern birds survived. Asteriornis is one of the oldest birds we know. It belongs to a group called Neornithes. This is the group that includes all birds alive today.

Some people call it the "Wonderchicken."

This bird was a relative of both chickens and ducks. It had parts like a chicken. It also had parts like a duck. This shows it was a close relative to their first common ancestor. Asteriornis had long, thin legs. It likely lived on the ground. It also ate many different kinds of food. These traits might have helped it stay alive. Its bones were found in a place called the Maastricht Formation. The name Asteriornis comes from a Greek word for bird. It also honors a goddess linked to falling stars.
