Most birds today do not have teeth. But this bird did! Its teeth were in the middle of its jaws. The tips of its jaws had a beak.

An average Ichthyornis was about the size of a pigeon. It could fly very well. Its wings and breastbone look like those of modern birds. Scientists found fossils in places like Kansas and Texas. These fossils lived about 95 to 80 million years ago.

These bones helped scientists learn how birds changed over time. Charles Darwin thought these fossils were very important. They showed how birds are related to other animals. One scientist, O.C. Marsh, first found the fossils in 1870. He thought the teeth belonged to a reptile at first. Later, he realized the teeth were part of the bird. This was a big discovery for science.
