A professor named Benjamin Franklin Mudge found the first fossils in 1870. He found them near the Solomon River in Kansas. He sent the fossils to a scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh. At first, Marsh made a mistake about the bones. He thought the teeth belonged to a separate reptile. He even gave the teeth a different name, Colonosaurus mudgei. By 1873, Marsh realized the teeth actually belonged to the bird. He then placed them in a new group called the Odontornithes, or "toothed birds."

This beak was compound, meaning it was made of several distinct plates. This structure is very similar to the beak of a modern albatross.

Researchers noticed that specimens from earlier eras were generally smaller than those from later times. For example, an older specimen named YPM 1450 had a humerus, or wing bone, about 110 millimeters long. In contrast, a younger specimen named YPM 1742 had a humerus that was 145 millimeters long. This suggests that Ichthyornis dispar may have increased in size over millions of years. It likely filled an ecological role similar to modern gulls, petrels, or skimmers.

Today, Ichthyornis is recognized as a member of the clade Ichthyornithes. This group includes all descendants of the most recent common ancestor of Ichthyornis and modern birds. While many other Cretaceous birds were once thought to be related, most are now seen as closer to the ancestors of modern birds. Ichthyornis remains a vital piece of the puzzle in understanding bird evolution. It serves as a clear example of how complex life forms transition and adapt over vast stretches of geological time.
