Scientists believe entire flocks were killed by volcanic heat, ash, or poisonous gas. These events buried the birds in lake sediments, protecting them for millions of years. 
Confuciusornis was roughly the size of a modern crow. Its wingspan could reach up to 50 centimeters.
Today, these fossils are held in many different collections. The National Geological Museum of China holds nearly 100 specimens. The Shandong Tianyu Museum of Nature has been reported to possess 536 specimens.
