In the Neogene period, these birds were massive, though the genus "Pseudodontornis" stirtoni stands out as a notable large example. 
Our understanding of these birds has grown through significant fossil discoveries across the globe. Fossil remains have been located in rocks dating from the Early Paleocene to the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary. In New Zealand, researchers found the oldest and most basal member of the family, which provides clues about their evolution. A major discovery occurred in February 2009 in the Ocucaje District of Peru. Paleontologist Mario Urbina and his team uncovered an almost-complete skull of an Odontopteryx. This specimen is considered the best-preserved pelagornithid cranium known. 
The ecology of these birds suggests they were highly efficient hunters of soft-bodied marine life. Because their bony teeth were hollow or filled with cancellous bone, they were likely not meant for tearing flesh. Instead, they were ideal for grasping prey to be swallowed whole. Their diet likely consisted of cephalopods, such as squid and cuttlefish, which diversified during the Paleogene. They may also have consumed soft-skinned fishes or eels. Rather than diving deep like a gannet, they likely skimmed the ocean surface, submerging only their beaks to snatch prey. 
Pelagornithids occupied a unique ecological niche, similar to the extinct pterosaurs like Pteranodon. They were capable of traveling vast distances by using ocean currents and atmospheric circulation. Unlike modern albatrosses, which avoid the calm, windless areas near the equator, pelagornithids lived in many climates. Their fossils have been found in locations ranging from Belgium and Togo to the Antarctic. They often appeared in the fossil record alongside penguins and other birds that lived near upwelling regions, where nutrient-rich water rises to the surface. 
Despite their long success, the pelagornithids eventually went extinct. Some scientists suggest that the rise of whales (cetaceans) and seals (pinnipeds) caused them to disappear through competition. However, evidence suggests they coexisted with many types of whales and seals for millions of years. For example, in the Middle Miocene, Pelagornis lived alongside various whales in the Atlantic. It is also possible that competition for nesting sites on coastlines played a role. While pinnipeds are mostly limited to near-shore waters, pelagornithids were masters of the open sea, roaming the oceans until the very end of their lineage.
