These birds had a very interesting way of working. Their pseudoteeth were not like the teeth in your mouth. They did not have enamel. They also did not grow in sockets. Most importantly, the birds did not lose and replace them throughout their lives. Between every two large pseudoteeth, there was often a single smaller one. This helped them catch food more easily. They also had very large salt glands inside their eye sockets. These glands helped them live in the salty ocean water.

Scientists have spent many years studying these fossils. The first species described was Pelagornis miocaenus. It was found in sediments in Armagnac, France. Scientists once thought it lived in the Middle Miocene time period. Later, they realized it was from the Early Miocene. A single bone from this bird was almost as big as a human arm. Another species, Pelagornis mauretanicus, was named much later in 2008. Its remains were found in Morocco.

This bird lived about 25 million years ago during the Oligocene. A worker named James Malcom found its fossil in 1983. He was building a new terminal at the Charleston International Airport in South Carolina. The fossil sat in storage for a long time. Then, a scientist named Dan Ksepka found it again in 2010. He identified it as a new species in 2014. The bird is named after Albert Sanders, who led the excavation.

Scientists categorize Pelagornis within the family Pelagornithidae. While they were once thought to be related to albatrosses in the order Procellariiformes, they are now placed in the order Pelecaniformes. Within this order, they are sometimes linked to the suborder Sulae, which includes cormorants and gannets. Other researchers unite them in the suborder Odontopterygia. This classification helps biologists understand how these giant soarers fit into the broader tree of life. Their specialized anatomy suggests they were highly adapted for dynamic soaring over open water.

The history of studying Pelagornis began with the description of Pelagornis miocaenus. This type species was found in Early Miocene sediments in Armagnac, France. The original specimen included a left humerus nearly the size of a human arm. While many species were suspected, Pelagornis mauretanicus was not formally named until 2008. Its remains were discovered in Late Pliocene or Early Pleistocene deposits in Morocco.
