The fossils date back to the Barremian stage of the early Cretaceous Period. This was approximately 126 million years ago. The species name, gauthieri, was chosen to honor Dr. Jacques Gauthier. He was a pioneer in the phylogenetic method used to classify animals.

We have learned more about the anatomy of this dinosaur through advanced technology. In 2009, scientists scanned the holotype skull using three-dimensional analysis.
